Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of motivation for change on depression, abstinence self-efficacy, and social support in patients with alcohol use disorder.

Methods: The study was performed in closed or opened wards of mental or alcohol clinics in Incheon and Gyeong-gi between July 2 and August 9, 2019. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 185 clinical patients who had been diagnosed with alcohol use disorder based on the DSM-5, the diagnostic criteria of American Psychiatric Association. Data were collected through self-reported questionnaires.

Results: Factors influencing subjects¡¯ motivation for change were the number of hospitalizations (¥â=.260, p=.001), age (¥â=-.193, p=.006), social support (¥â=.201, p=.014), and abstinence period (¥â=.168, p=.015). More hospitalizations, younger age, greater social support, and longer abstinence periods led to stronger motivation for change. The rationale was 15.7%.

Conclusion: Among patients with alcohol use disorder, social support, the number of hospitalizations, age, and abstinence period affect motivation for change. In addition, repeated hospitalization should not focus on concern regarding recurrence, but should be treated as a facilitating factor.
